African Textiles
Kente Cloth from Ghana
Students will look at different handmade textiles from Africa. They will learn about Kente cloth, which is a colorful fabric composed of strips woven together by the Asante people of Ghana. Another textile from Ghana is Andinkra cloth which is a fabric stamped with symbols carved from a calabash. The symbols have special meanings and some are even considered magical. The designs are created from many different lines that create overall patterns.
Students will also learn about Khorogo cloth which is made by the Senufo people of Cote d’Ivoire. This fabric is covered with animals that are filled with lines and pattern. Another type of textile is Malian mudcloth, a handmade cotton fabric dyed with fermented mud.
